Accessibility

Did you know?

  • About 1.85 million people in Ontario (that’s 15.5% of the population) have a disability.
  • 47.2% of people over the age of 65 have disabilities.

Predictions are that the number of people with disabilities will continue to grow as the population ages. Ontario needs to be more accessible to people with disabilities. It is the right thing to do. It also makes good sense economically and socially. When barriers get in the way of people with disabilities participating fully in society as a result of their disabilities, everyone loses.

In 2001, the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) became law and municipalities across Ontario, including the Town of Amherstburg were required to develop annual accessibility plans to address the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to persons with disabilities; make the accessibility plan available to the public; and consult with people with disabilities in planning processes.

In 2005, the provincial government passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). This legislation requires the development and implementation of accessibility standards for the private and public sector, with a goal of being a barrier-free Ontario for individuals with disabilities by the year 2025. Currently, municipalities must follow the regulations set out in both the ODA, 2001 and the AODA, 2005.
