Candidates

How can I run as a candidate for the 2010 election?

Candidate nomination period is now closed.

Eligibility - to be a candidate?

 In order to become a candidate in the 2010 election, you must:

  • reside in Amherstburg or be the owner or tenant of land in Amherstburg, or be the spouse of such owner or tenant;
  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • be at least 18 years old; and
  • not be prohibited from voting under subsection (3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law. 2002, c. 17

It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine whether he or she is qualified to be elected to and hold the office

Note: A candidate, if nominated, must remain qualified throughout the election and, if elected, throughout the term of office.  School board candidates should confirm that they have the qualifications described in s.219 of the Education Act.

How much does it cost to file a nomination paper?

 The filing fee for Mayor is $200 and for all other offices the fee is $100. Payment must be made at the time of filing by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order only. Personal cheques will not be accepted.

 Do I have to file a nomination form or can someone else file it for me?

 The candidate or an agent for the candidate can file the nomination paper. The nomination paper must be filed in person as the Declaration section of the nomination paper must be signed by the candidate and taken before a Commissioner of Oaths.  The Clerk can administer the oath.  If an agent is filing the nomination paper on behalf of a candidate, the declaration of qualification must be commissioned before the agent files the nomination paper with the Town Clerk. The agent must also provide a copy of the candidate’s identification, as well as providing his/her own identification.  If the declaration of qualification is not commissioned prior to filing, the Town Clerk will not accept the nomination paper.

 What kind of identification do I need to file a nomination form?

 In order to file a nomination paper, you must bring in acceptable current photo identification which shows your name and qualifying address (i.e. driver's license). Please contact the Clerk's office for further confirmation of acceptable identification.
